Developmental delay

Saying that a child has a developmental delay (or maturational delay) simply means they are not performing the tasks expected for their age.

In our case, the pediatric neurophysiotherapist focuses on gross and fine motor skills, coordination, and body awareness, among other areas. In more complex cases, treatment is often approached collaboratively with neurologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists.

The causes of this delay vary greatly, ranging from musculoskeletal disorders (such as muscle contractures and shortening, or hyper-/hypotonia) to neurological causes (syndromes and neurological diseases affecting the child’s developmental progress).

Regardless of the cause, the specialized physiotherapist carries out various neurological and developmental tests to detect a delay as early as possible, eliminates all potential contributing factors (such as contractures and shortening), and strives to help the child continue developing as normally as possible in cases where the underlying causes cannot be removed (e.g., neurological conditions).
